Abstract
Carbonyl compounds, in particular aldehydes and ketones, are prepared by contacting an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon with an aqueous solution containing a compound of a metal of the platinum group at a temperature of 0-200 DEG C. in the presence of an oxidising agent having an oxidation potential higher than that of the platinum group metal compound in the solution. Preferably the halides, sulphates or phosphates of the platinum group metal are used. Suitable oxidising agents are, for example, persulphates, oxygen acids of halogens and their salts, chromates and other oxyacid salts, and salts of multivalent metals. The process is preferably carried out at a pressure of 1-50 atm. The process is applicable to aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic substituted olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons as well as diolefinic hydrocarbons. Among the compounds of the platinum group metals used are salts of palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, rhodium, and chloroplatinic acid. The oxidising agents used include ferric sulphate, potassium persulphate, potassium dichromate, cupric sulphate, cupric acetate, potassium bromate, potassium periodate and ferric chloride.
