Abstract

In the process for the manufacture of aldehydes, ketones and/or carboxylic acids corresponding to the aldehydes by the reaction of an olefine with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in neutral to acid medium in the presence of a liquid catalyst comprising a salt of platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium or palladium and a redox system, the reaction being carried out in separate reaction and catalyst regeneration steps with at least one of these steps being carried out in a flow tube through which the catalyst solution and the reactants are streaming with high velocity as described in the parent Specification, the reaction is carried out at a temperature above 150 DEG C. and under a pressure which is higher than the saturation vapour pressure of the catalyst solution at the reaction temperature used but not more than 15 atm. above it. Suitable redox systems are those formed by compounds of copper, mercury, cerium, thallium, tin, lead, titanium, vanadium, antimony, chromium, molybdenum, uranium, manganese, iron, cobalt or nickel. It may be advantageous to add to the reaction mixture compounds which produce chlorine atoms, e.g. a chloride of sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, iron or zinc or cupric chloride.
