Abstract
A free-flowing fire extinguishing composition adapted to be discharged on to a fire in the form of a cloud of powder consists of 90 per cent or more by weight of sodium bicarbonate, between 1 and 5 per cent of a substance which renders the powder water repellant, such as a water-insoluble metal salt of a higher fatty acid, e.g. the stearates or palmitates of magnesium, calcium, zinc, or aluminium, especially magnesium stearate, and not more than 5 per cent of sodium silicate in water-soluble form. The composition may also contain not more than 5 per cent and preferably not more than 1 per cent of a water-insoluble or slightly soluble phosphate, such as tricalcium phosphate, trisodium phosphate, or magnesium phosphate. It is desirable that all the powders are ground so that substantially all will pass a 100-mesh B.S.S. screen.
