Abstract

A fire extinguishing powder comprises 90 per cent or more of a basic fire-extinguishing element, and a small amount of chlorinated paraffin wax to impart water-repellency to the powder. In addition, a small proportion of an agent adapted to improve the free-flowing quality of the powder may be incorporated. The basic fire-extinguishing element may be sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, hydrated borax, hydrated sodium sulphate or other basic element described in Specification 812,146, or sand or other siliceous material, e.g. diatomaceous earth or french chalk. The free-flowing agent is a water-insoluble or slightly water-insoluble phosphate such as tricalcium phosphate or magnesium phosphate. Not exceeding 0.09 per cent of a water-repellant of the magnesium stearate type, or other metal salt of a higher fatty acid having more than 16 carbon atoms, may also be incorporated.
