Abstract
803,038. Engine cylinders; stuffing-box substitutes. FLICK-REEDY CORPORATION. Oct. 25, 1956 [Dec. 16, 1955], No. 32539/56. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A piston-and-cylinder device comprises a cylinder head 4, 5 at each end of the cylinder 3, a removable piston-rod seal 11 carried in the head 5, a packing gland retaining plate 9 abutting the head 5, tie-rods 6 connecting together the cylinder, heads, and retaining plate, and locking members 16 secured in the head 5 and engaging the tie-rods 6 so that the retaining plate can be removed to give access to the packing without disturbing the cylinder and head assembly. The locking members 16 are engaged with the tie-rods 6 after the latter have been pre-stressed by tightening the nuts 7, 8. The seal 11, which may be of the leatherflange type within a cage 12, is secured by the plate 9 through a piston-rod bushing 13 arranged also to carry oil and dirt wipers 14, 15. On the removal of the retainer plate 9, the bushing 13 and the cage 12 may be removed from the piston-rod 10. The cage 12 and bushing 13 may be secured together to form a single replaceable unit. The head 4 may be similarly secured to the tie-rods 6, if fitted with a removable gland and retainer plate, in accordance with the invention, for sealing the second rod of a double piston.
