Abstract

713,992. Pistons; stuffing-box substitutes. SKINNER, R. L. April 9, 1952, No. 9065/52. Classes 122(1) and 122(5) [Also in Group XXVII] A contra-piston 10 slidable manually or automatically to vary the compression ratio in an internal-combustion engine cylinder 18 seals against a cylinder liner extension piece 56 through packs 16, 24 of flexible frusto-conical rings, as of metal, clamped on the piston 10 so as to be supported on their exterior side substantially up to the piece 56 but partially free on their interior side due to the provision of recesses 106 in screwed clamping members 102. The flexible rings are chamfered to engage the piece 56 as scrapers so as to resist carbon &c., deposition thereon and the piece has a shoulder 70 provided to act as a reactance point for the engine explosions and so set up vibration of the piece to the same end. The piston 10 slides in a cylinder head 20 which holds down through a Belleville washer 58 the piece 56. Further packs of sealing rings, 26, 64, 66, are provided. Piston actuation may be effected under the joint action of a spring 12 and the pressure of oil pumped to a space 22 through ducts 36. The packs 16, 24 are lubricated by oil supplied through a pipe 23 and a passage 25.
