802,770. Boots &c. HALLIWELL, E. F. Nov. 1, 1956, No. 33432/56. Class 17(2) In making slip lasted footwear, after the usual attachment of an upper 14 to a sock 15 by stitching 16, a welt is attached by stitching 17 for subsequent stitching at 22 to a midsole 19 and an outsole 21. The welt strip of plastic, leather or other similar material is generally rectangular in shape and is slit at 9 through at least twothirds of the width of the welt for the stitches 17. A ridge 11 extending beyond the lease of the slit 9 may be provided to act as a guide for the stitching 22, and the upper part 8 of the welt may be initially spaced from the lower part 7 at the slit edge to facilitate the stitching 17.
