Abstract
802,491. Stuffing-box substitutes. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. March 9, 1956 [March 11, 1955], No. 7437/56. Class 122 (5). In a joint, such as a Hooke's joint, having a trunnion 16 journalled in ball or roller bearings 22 in a bearing cup 17 adapted to be supplied with lubricant, the lubricant is retained and grit &c. excluded by a sealing-ring 26, Fig. 2, sealingly secured to the cup and having at least two spaced resilient lips 33, 34 engaging the trunnion. The ring 26 may be of natural rubber or synthetic rubber, such as Neoprene or the material sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Buna N," or nylon and is press-fitted into or cemented to a metal cup 27 or held therein by tangs on the interior of the cup penetrating the ring. The cup 27 is inserted in a bore 24 in the bearing cup 17 and acts as an end stop for the roller bearings 22. In a modification, Fig. 4, the cup 27 is replaced by a metal backing ring 32 and the ring 26 is compressed in the bore 24 with a shoulder 42 abutting the end wall 29 of the cup 17 and has an integral skirt 43 sealingly engaging the trunnion at points 44 and 45. In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the lip 34 is omitted and the ring 26 is formed with a skirt engaging the frusto-conical portion of the trunnion. When the bearing is charged with fresh lubricant through a passage 19 in the trunnion the lips 33, 34 and skirt 43 are deformed to allow the used lubricant to escape.
