838,458. Ball-and-socket joints. LANGEN, V. July 24, 1957 [Sept. 10, 1956], No. 23477/57. Class 65(2) A joint in which the load is applied mainly to the upper half of the ball 4 and is transmitted by an upper ball cup 2 comprises a plastics ring 6, disposed below the cup in the central zone of the ball between the ball and the joint casing 1, and a resilient bearing member 8 disposed below the ring between the ball and a lower ball cup 5. The ball cup 2 is made of plastics, soft rubber or the like, and has a lining 3 of steel, bronze, or plastics which may have grooves 9 connecting a lubricant reservoir 10 to an annular chamber 7. The internal diameter of the ring 6 may be greater than the diameter of the ball to provide a lubricant chamber therebetween, or lubricant grooves 6a may be formed in the ring. A lubricant gap 8a. may be provided between the member 8 and the ball.
