Abstract
786,151. Steam traps. ROBERTSHAWFULTON CONTROLS CO. May 31, 1956 [Oct. 31, 1955], No. 16873/56. Class 64(2) A steam trap comprises valves 36, 38, an element 30 expansible and contractible in response to variations in temperature or pressure, and a connection 32 between the element and the valves. The element 30 is in the form of a bellows charged with volatile liquid which changes from a vaporous to a liquid state when condensate collects around the element 30 so that the latter contracts to cause the valve 38 to open an outlet 14 to a discharge pipe for the condensate. If excessive pressure occurs due, for example, to water hammer or sudden opening of a valve in the steam line, the element 30 contracts sufficiently to cause the valve 36 partially or completely to close an inlet 12 while displacing the valve 38 to allow maximum flow through the outlet 14.
