Abstract
1,179,982. Valves. H. R. GERDTS, and W. F. GERDTS, [trading as GUSTAV F. GERDTS K.G.]. 1 Jan., 1968 [2 Jan., 1967], No. 184/68. Heading F2V, [Also in Division G1 A thermostat 1 controlling the release of condensate from a steam trap comprises a shut-off element 12 co-operating with a bush 13, the element 12 being carried by a diaphragm 11 which with a rigid wall 10 forms a thermally expansible assembly 9, the expansible material inside the assembly consisting of a mixture of a fluid that is vaporizable at the normal working temperature of the steam trap, and a fluid that is substantially non-vaporizable at this temperature, the proportion of vaporizable fluid being such that at the boiling point of the condensate in the trap the fluid is not completely vaporized whilst at maximum temperature to which the assembly is likely to be subjected the maximum permissible internal pressure for the strength of the assembly 9 is not exceeded. The thermostat 1 comprises a retaining part 7, of dish form, secured on retaining ribs 3, the lower part 8 of the part 7 being perforated and apertured to allow passage of the shut-off element 12. Condensate flows from the inlet side 5 through gaps between the ribs 3 to the outlet 6. The assembly 9 is filled through an opening 15 which is then sealed with a ball 16. For a steam trap having a maximum steam temperature of 400‹ C. and subject to pressures between 0 and 20 atm., the assembly 9 preferably contains 1 to 3% by volume of vaporizable fluid, e.g. water, or propyl alcohol, the remainder non-vaporizable fluid, e.g. thermostable oil, glycerine or a similar alcohol.
