Abstract

783,780. Valves. ROBBINS, A. H. Sept. 7, 1955 [June 8, 1954], No. 16772/55. Class 135. In a screw-down tap, which is opened by manual actuation of a threaded spindle 11, comprising a spring 21 to close the tap, the spring being isolated from the liquid controlled by the tap and co-operating with a resilient closure 7 to automatically exert the required force to seat the closure upon the spindle 11 contacting the valve body 10, the closure is a moulded cylindrical washer of resilient material, such as rubber, arranged with its upper end clamped between a body flange and a washer 9. Upon turning the spindle 11 in an anti-clockwise direction by means of the handle 12 the latter engages the head of the centre spindle 14 and through washers 23, 25 lifts the lower part of the closure 7 off the seat 5, whereupon the side wall of the washer bulges outwardly. A guide sleeve 17 and the spring 21 move upwardly with the centre spindle 14 whilst a guide pin 19 in the washer 9, passing through a slot in the sleeve 17 and entering an axial groove in the spindle 14, prevents any turning of these parts and controls the maximum valve opening movement. The handle 12 is rotated in the reverse direction to close the valve, the spring 21 and washer 7 exerting the necessary pressure to force the lower face of the washer against the seat 5. The body portion 10 may be unscrewed to enable the washer 7 or spring 21 to be replaced and a cap may be threaded into the central opening in the handle. In a modification, the spring may be disposed within the moulded washer.
