Abstract

210,530. Shaw, H. S. Hele-, and Livsey, H. Nov. 1, 1922. Seats, valve members, and faces; actuating mechanism; leakage, stopping; materials, special. -In a fluid tap, an axially-movable plug moves into a packing ring of flexible material to shut off the fluid. The flexible packing ring or seating member 5 is held in the casing 6 by a screwed nozzle 72 and a similar ring 50 is secured by a cap 67. The plug 25 is provided with a screw thread 27 co-operating with a fixed pin 40, and having a circular groove 30 at each end to prevent jamming at either end of the travel. The tapered end 250 of the plug is grooved at 24, extending into the cylindrical portion. Fluid tightness is ensured by the pressure of the fluid around the flexible members 5 and 50. In a modification, Fig. 3, the casing 6 is of rubber composition or similar material, and the spindle is plain. The plug 25 may be of porcelain, and may have a shoulder 23 to limit its movement. In another modification, Fig. 5, the rings 5, 50 are formed of rubber tube, and are held in position by conical rings 74 and the screwed members 72, 67. In another modification, the rings 5, 50 are coaxial with the inlet instead of the outlet, and the free end of the seating ring 5 extends away from instead of towards the plug. In another example, Fig. 9, the plug has upper and lower plain portions 2, 25 separated by a reduced portion 26. The inner end of the portion 25 is grooved at 24. The inlet and outlet 7, 73 are coaxial, and the fluid pressures are balanced. The flexible seating member 5 has free edges extending in opposite directions, so as to be self-sealing whichever end of the tap is used as the inlet.
