Abstract

783,733. Flame arrestors for dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 2, 1955 [Aug. 2, 1954], No. 22177/55. Class 47 [Also in Group XXXV ] A dynamo-electric machine is provided with a flame arrestor comprising a plurality of superimposed layers of highly conductive material maintained apart from one another by indentations in the material, the indentations being of a form unable to completely nest in one another. In one arrangement two flame arrestors 31, Fig. 3 are provided, each located in an annular passage, one adjacent the cooling air inlet and the other adjacent the cooling air outlet of the machine, and each comprising a strip of material having regularly spaced U-shaped indentations 33 extending across the width of the material, the strip being wound upon itself in spiral form. The shape of the indentations 33 is such that when two indentations are superimposed one upon another as at 38, they will not nest together. In a modification wherein the cooling air is adapted to pass radially, each flame arrestor may be formed from a plurality of superimposed annular strip 39, Figs. 5 and 6.
