781,282. Mining and tunnelling machines. GOODMAN MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 25, 1955 [Dec. 8, 1954], No. 33899/55. Classes 68(1) and 85 A rotary-cutter head for a mining or tunnelling machine comprises radially spaced cutter bits 11 arranged to cut concentric kerfs 72 in the working face and core. breaking rollers 12 mounted to follow the bits and break off the annular core between the kerfs. Each roller comprises a hollow hub formed with a plurality of spaced enlargements with peripheral cutting edges 34, 34a, and is mounted on an axis slightly inclined to a radius of the head. The diameter of -the successive cutting edges decreases towards the axis of the head. Each roller is mounted on a stationary shaft 29 by tapered roller bearings 30, 31 located in the planes of the cutting edges, lubricant being supplied to the bearings by means of fittings 59, passages 67, 69, and reservoirs 71. The cutting edges may be notched. The cutter head comprises an outer ring 14 and an inner circle 13, which are rotated in different directions.
