Abstract

An oil solution of a sulphurized terpene, useful for addition as an anti-oxidant to mineral lubricating oils, is prepared by reacting a monoor di-cyclic terpene with sulphur in the absence of lubricating oil, steam-distilling the reaction mixture, initially in the absence of lubricating oil, at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the sulphurizd terpene to remove the lower-boiling components of the reaction mixture, and adding mineral lubricating oil to the reaction mixture during the steam distillation. The terpene may be dipentene, carene, alpha-pinene or camphene. Lubricating oil compositions, prepared by mixing the oil solution with further mineral lubricating oil, may also contain other additives such as detergents, anti-wear agents, rust and corrosion inhibitors and extreme pressure agents. A preferred additive is a sulphur-containing alkaline earth metal salt of a phenol, prepared for example as described in Specification 720,372.
