Abstract

In metal working operations there is need for a lubricant which has the characteristics of corrosion inhibition and of good drawability. The difficulty has been to combine these characteristics and yet avoid further problems, such as storage instability and/or incompatibility of components. The invention provides a metal working lubricant which comprises a mineral oil, a barium lanolate soap and synthetic barium hydrocarbon sulfonate. Suitably from 1 to 10 wt.% of the soap and 5 to 15 wt.% of the sulfonate are employed. The lanolate soap is advantageously formed in situ by reaction of barium hydroxide octahydrate with wool grease fatty acids. The sulfonate is preferably barium didodecyl benzene sulfonate.
