Abstract

A stable water-in-oil emulsion lubricant for marine diesels comprises by weight 10-50 per cent water, 80-45 per cent mineral lubricating oil of 45-100 S.U.S./210 DEG F., 1-58 alkali metal hydroxide, the amount thereof being sufficient to effect a base number in the lubricant of between 10 and 100, 0.5-5 per cent of an oil-soluble detergent, 3-7 per cent of a water-in-oil emulsifier, and 0.5-1 per cent of a C16-C20 saturated fatty acid. The oil may be any mineral oil having the above viscosity but naphthenic oils are preferred. Suitable detergents are petroleum and wax-substituted aryl sulphonates, e.g. magnesium petroleum sulphonate and barium wax naphthalene sulphonate, sulphurized or unsulphurized phenates and carboxylates, e.g. sulphurized calcium phenate, barium wax phenate and magnesium wax benzene carboxylate. The emulsifying agents may be sulphonates, e.g. sodium mahogany sulphonate and ammonium naphthalene sulphonate, esters of high molecular weight, acids such as those obtained by the controlled oxidation of wax, or fatty acid soaps, e.g. sodium oleate, potassium stearate, and ammonium linoleate, the esters and ammonium soaps being preferred. Stable emulsions are said to be obtained only when between 0.5 and 1 per cent weight of fatty acid and between 3 and 7 per cent weight of emulsifier are used, the preferred total of acid and emulsifier being 5 per cent. Optional ingredients mentioned are antirust agents, E.P. agents, and anti-oxidants. In an example, a lubricant consists of 60 parts (weight) of a blend (38:62 by volume) of solvent-refined coastal oils of 150 S.U.S./210 DEG F. and 55 S.U.S./210 DEG F. respectively, 30 parts water, 4.5 parts of emulsifier (polyhydric alcohol esters of high molecular weight acids derived from oxidized petroleum wax), 3 parts lithium hydroxide monohydrate, 2 parts calcium mahogany sulphonate and 0.5 parts stearic acid.
