Abstract

A detergent inhibitor additive for mineral oil compositions (e.g. middle distillate fuels, lubricating oils, transformer oils, hydraulic oils) is prepared by reacting a hydrocarbon oil solution of a phosphosulphurized hydrocarbon and an alkyl phenol or alkyl phenol sulphide with CaO or Ca(OH)2 and then with CO2 in the presence of NH4OH or a C1-4 aliphatic amine. Preferably the amount of CO2 used is 80-95% of the quantity theoretically necessary to convert all the calcium present to calcium carbonate. An ammonium sulphonate derived from a natural or synthetic hydrocarbon sulphonic acid may also be present, examples being given of such sulphonates. The oil compositions may contain other additives, e.g. polymethacrylates, polybutenes, phenyl-a -naphthylamine, alkyl and bis phenols, and zinc dialkyldithiophosphates.
