Abstract

A composition suitable for use as an aviation hydraulic fluid comprises (a) a liquid mixture of isomeric brominated ethyl benzenes of formula <FORM:0986211/C4-C5/1> where z is 2 to 3, (b) a mineral oil or mixture of mineral oils having a flash point of at least 200 DEG F. and a pour-point of less than - 75 DEG F., and (c) 2-20 weight per cent of a polymeric thickening agent such that the composition has a viscosity of at least 6 cs. at 130 DEG F. and not more than 600 cs. at -40 DEG F., the amount of (a) being such as to provide 30-45 weight per cent bromine in the total composition. Additive (c) may be a polyisobutylene (e.g. of M.W. 1000-3000) or an alkyl polymethacrylate (e.g. of M.W. 2000-20,000). Preferably one or more antioxidants are also present, e.g. phenyl a - or b -naphthylamine, 2,6-ditertiarybutyl-p-cresol, and methylene bis-(2,6-di-tertiarybutyl)phenol. Other optional additives include tricresyl phosphate, and benzotriazole.
