Abstract

Monochloro-m-xylene is made by the action of chlorine in presence of antimony trisulphide free from iron, on meta-xylene, formation of 4-chloro-m-xylene being favoured. In an example the chlorination of m-xylene as described above, at - 5 DEG to - 10 DEG C., is compared with the known method using ferric chloride, and gives mainly 4-chloro-m-xylene, with some 2-chloro-m-xylene.
