Abstract
Metals and alloys are heat treated by introducing them into a series of two or more fused salt baths in succession, the baths being maintained at temperatures of 1,700 DEG F-500 DEG F and being composed of mixtures of materials having no oxygen molecules therein and which are harmonious throughout the two or more baths to the extent that material carried over by the metals or into a succeeding bath will not introduce any materials not already present in each succeeding bath or cause any qualitative change in the composition of the said bath. In one case the series consists of three baths, the first being operated at 1,350 DEG -1,700 DEG F, the second at 500-700 DEG F and the third at 700-1,100 DEG F. The first bath consists of 39-50 per cent by weight of potassium chloride, 40-60 of sodium chloride and 1-10 of sodium fluoride and the second and third baths are of the composition set out in Specification 636,027.
