Abstract

1 : 2 : 3 : 4 - Tetrachloro - hexafluoro - butane is made by the reaction of 1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrafluorohexachloro-butane with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of antimony pentachloride, or of 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 - tetrafluoro - tetrachloro - butene - (1) with chlorine and hydrogen fluoride in the presence of antimony pentachloride. The process in either case is preferably carried out at a temperature of 100-180 DEG C. at a pressure of 20-40 atmospheres and using an excess of about 10-15 per cent of hydrogen fluoride above that theoretically required. Examples of the preparation of 1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrachloro-hexafluoro-butane by each of the above methods are given.
