Abstract
Ferric chloride is obtained by treatment of sulphidic iron ores with chlorine in a fluidized bed at temperatures between 250 DEG C. and 600 DEG C. Sulphur chlorides, produced in the process, and/or inert diluents may be added to the chlorine. Treatment at 350 DEG -420 DEG C. yields ferric chloride and sulphur monochloride; while treatment at 450 DEG -520 DEG C. yields ferric chloride sulphur monochloride and sulphur. The monochloride may either be separated or recycled back to the process.
