Abstract
Scandium is extracted from its ores by chlorinating all the material, preferably with carbon and chlorine gas, and distilling the chlorides formed with subsequent condensation above 350 DEG C., preferably at 400 DEG C. and more particularly between 600 DEG and 900 DEG C. The ores which usually contain yttrium are preferably heated at a temperature between 900 DEG and 1000 DEG C. during chlorination and the yttrium chloride is left behind. The oxide of scandium may be preferably precipitated with ammonia.ALSO:Scandium chloride may be reduced to the metal within sodium magnesium or calcium.
