Abstract

A method for separating iron values from titaniferous oxidic iron material comprises providing in the titaniferous iron material low-valency titanium values in amount sufficient to accept the oxygen of the iron values in the material and removing the iron values as volatile ferric chloride by reacting with chlorine. The term low-valency titanium values includes oxidic titanium compounds and complex compositions in which the titanium is present in the di- or tri-valent state. The low-valency titanium values may be provided in the material by swelling it at a temperature in excess of 1500 DEG C., so that some separation of molten iron from the slag occurs, until sufficient low-valency titanium values are present in the slag which is then chlorinated, or they may be added to the material as a composition, e.g. Ti2O3, containing sufficient di- or tri-valent titanium. The chlorination takes place in a fluidized bed at 550-950 DEG C.ALSO:A method for separating iron values from titaniferous oxidic iron material comprises providing in the titaniferous iron material lowvalency titanium values in amount sufficient to accept the oxygen of the iron values in the material and removing the iron values as volatile ferric chloride by reacting with chlorine.
