Abstract
A process for treating ferro-titaniferous ores comprises mixing ore and carbonaceous material in stoichiometric proportions for the reduction of iron oxide to iron and titanic oxide to titanous oxide and proportional amounts of titanium carbide, and heating the mixture to at least 1800 DEG C. by passing an electric current through carbonaceous electrodes positioned to initiate the reaction in the central portion of the mixture. The product of the reaction may be crushed and subjected to magnetic separation to remove the iron from the titaniferous product which comprises titanous oxide, titanium carbide, and a titanium oxycarbide. The coarsely crystalline titaniferous product may be pelleted with calcined petroleum coke, sodium silicate, and water, dried to 0.01% free water, and then reacted with chlorine in a shaft type chlorinator, to obtain complete chlorination of the titanium.ALSO:A process for treating ferro-titaniferous ores comprises mixing ore and carbonaceous material in stoichiometric proportions for the reduction of iron oxide to iron and of titanic oxide to titanous oxide and proportional amounts of titanium carbide, and heating the mixture to at least 1800 DEG C. by passing an electric current through carbonaceous electrodes positioned to initiate the reaction in the central portion of the mixture. The ore may be ilmenite and one or more graphite plates may be placed in the mixture between the electrodes. The product of the reaction may be crushed and the iron separated by magnetic separation from the titaniferous product.
