Abstract

Chlorinated paraffin wax is stabilized by incorporating at least 0.5 per cent of triethanolamine. Chlorinated waxes of differing chlorine content or their mixtures with such substances as esters, employed as plasticizers, may be treated, the amount of stabilizer being in excess of that required to neutralize all the hydrogen chloride liable to be liberated. Chlorinated paraffin wax with dibutyl phthalate in proportions of 60 : 40 by weight is stabilized by addition of 1 per cent of triethanolamine for 3-4 hrs. at 160 DEG C. or for at least 4-5 months at ordinary temperature. The colour imparted by the stabilizer may be removed by known methods for removing resinified impurities, e.g. filtration through fuller's earth. Triethanolamine inhibits the catalytic effect of metals and their compounds such as iron, zinc and iron halides. Examples compare the hydrogen chloride evolved when a chlorinated wax of 41 per cent chlorine content contaminated with small amounts of iron, tin, zinc and aluminium is heated at 160 DEG C., alone or after addition of 1 per cent triethanolamine and/or small amounts of ferric chloride. The effect of varying amounts of stabilizer, 0.1, 0.6 and 1 per cent, on a chlorinated wax, dibutyl phthalate mixture, with or without added iron, is also shown. Specifications 418,230 and 495,410 are referred to.
