774,362. Band knives. FORTUNA-WERKE SPEZIALMASCHINENFABRIK AKT.-GES. Nov. 4, 1955 [Nov. 4, 1954], No. 31693/55. Class 31 (1). A band knife 1 is driven by means of two rollers 3, 4 engaging opposite faces thereof. The knife is guided in the cutting zone by means of a member 2. A pair of brake rollers engaging opposite faces of the knife may be arranged on the side of the member 2 remote from the rollers 3, 4. The axes of the drive and brake rollers may be inclined to the direction of travel of the knife so as to cause the back 7 of the knife to bear against the guide edge 8 of the member 2. The knife is constantly sharpened by means of a grinding device 9 and is guided on its return run by means of further rollers. A pair of spring-influenced wedges 16, 17, Fig. 4, urge the guide member 2 with the knife towards the workpiece until the ground faces of the knife are held in adjustable grooved rollers 11 or between pairs of adjustable plain rollers; alternatively, this may be achieved by hydraulic or electromagnetic means. Any or all of the rollers may be provided with coverings to increase friction or reduce noise.
