Abstract
926,748. Stapling fibres. ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH, N.V. Feb. 16, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1961], No. 6027/62. Class 120 (3). In a stapling apparatus in which successive portions of an advancing tow of filaments clamped between opposed successive pairs of teeth on the rims of draw wheels rolling together are severed, the movement of knives relative to the tow has chopping and cutting components of approximately the same magnitude and each knife, moving through its own plane, strikes the tow with its edge across the full width of a tow portion and the wear on the knives is thereby minimized. The apparatus shown comprises a rotatable head 13 carrying knives 17 helically disposed around shaft 14 and making an angle of inclination of 45 degrees therewith, and draw wheels 1 and 2 which rotate at the same circumferential speed and have, on flat and conical surfaces, teeth 9 and 10 between which a tow 20 is nipped. The shaft 14 runs parallel to the plane through the shafts 3 and 4 of wheels 1 and 2 and cuts shaft 3 at an angle of 45 degrees. The striking edge of the knives coincides with the tangent line between the surfaces of wheels 1 and 2 so that the surface described by the edges of the knives makes an acute angle with the plane through shafts 3 and 4.
