Apparatus for sealing filled bags comprises in one form, Figs. 2 and 4, a grid 7 supported in a housing 1 and a reciprocable comb 10 having teeth 9 co-operating with the bars 8 of the grid. The comb is reciprocated in longitudinal guides by an adjustable eccentric 15 driven by an electric motor 17. The bars and teeth are heated by electrical elements accommodated in recesses 13. The bags 24 are supported side-byside in trays 22 in a drawer 18 so that the portions, e.g. corners, to be sealed are located between adjacent bars and teeth. Movement of the comb to the left thus effects sealing of half the bags in the row and the subsequent movement to the right seals the remainder. The drawer 18 may be hermetically sealed to the housing and air may be withdrawn from the bags or an inert gas supplied thereto through a pipe 26. In a second form, Fig. 5, rows of heated dies 30 are supported in the undersurfaces of a fixed beam 36 and a movable beam 38 which is reciprocated in the direction of arrows 37 by a crank mechanism 44-46 driven by an electric motor 42 controlled by microswitches operated by cams 47. Rows of cooperating punches 29 are supported in the upper surfaces of the beam 38 and a fixed beam 35, each punch comprising a pin 33 carried by a spring-loaded sleeve 32 and a collar 34 which is urged by a spring 61 against a shoulder 62 on the pin. Two rows of bags are supported in upper and lower drawers slidable on guides 40 and 41 in the housing, the arrangement being such that upward movement of the beam 38 effects sealing of the upper row of bags and downward movement thereof effects sealing of the lower row. The pins 33 may be slotted to facilitate evacuation of the bags.
