Abstract

578,127. Spring assemblies. TRIGGS, W. W. (United States Bedding Co.). Dec. 14, 1943, No. 20975. [Class 52 (iv)] Springs A are fed by hand between guides 20 until their end turns are positioned in grooves in die plates 21. A clamping device 26 holds the springs in place while spiral connectors B are threaded along a channel 22 in the die plate at each end of the springs to interconnect the row and the clamping means is then withdrawn. By operating a crank 43 the opposed pairs of die plates are fed downwardly a distance corresponding to the spacing of the spring rows and a second row of springs is inserted in the guides 20 the end turns of which row enter the upper grooves of die plates the lower grooves of which already accommodate the unconnected edge of the initial row of springs. The clamping device is again brought into operation and a second pair of spiral connectors is applied and the process repeated until the desired number of rows have been connected and the assembly drops on the apron 100. The clamping means preferably comprise toggle-operated bars which are withdrawn between operations by a chain and sprocket mechanism 60, 62 carried by an extension 63 at one end of the machine and operated by a lever 69.
