Abstract

Nitrogen-containing cellulose derivatives are obtained by contacting cellulose or a cellulose ester or ether containing free hydroxyl groups, in filamentary form or otherwise, with an organic carbodiimide in the presence of a copper salt. The process is applicable to the treatment of natural or regenerated cellulose such as cotton, cotton linters, cellulose pulp, viscose and cuprammonium rayon, and to the treatment of nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate and methyl cellulose, and solutions of cellulose may also be treated. Specified carbodiimides are diisopropyl-, n-butyl-cyclohexyl-, dicyclohexyl-, methyl - tert. - butyl -, tert. - butyl - cyclohexyl -, cyclohexyl - phenyl -, tert. - butyl - phenyl - and diphenyl-carbodiimide, although any alkyl, dialkyl, aryl, diaryl, alkyl-aryl, cycloalkyl or dicycloalkyl carbodiimides may be employed. Specified copper salts are cuprous and cupric chlorides, sulphates and acetates. Isourea ethers of cellulose are said to be formed, the treated fibres or fabrics being dyeable with acid dyestuffs. Examples are given.
