Abstract

So-called "staple fibre" which is obtained by cutting up filaments prepared from cellulose solutions, &c., is rendered non-inflammable by treating the formed filaments at a stage prior to the cutting up with fireproofing solutions such as are ordinarily employed in fireproofing textile materials. The treatment may be carried out after the usual drying process, or in the case of viscose filaments optionally while the filaments are in the gel condition, or in the case of nitrocellulose filaments immediately after the denitration. According to examples, sodium tungstate is deposited on the filaments by treatment with a solution of this salt in acetic acid, and aluminium tungstate by treatment with a solution of aluminium acetate and sodium tungstate in acetic acid. To waterproof the threads, an excess of aluminium acetate may be employed in the second case, or formaldehyde may be added to the bath; or the threads may be treated subsequently with formaldehyde.
