Abstract
Titanium metal is produced by adding anhydrous potassium fluotitanate and/or sodium fluotitanate to molten sodium at a temperature of 500-1300 DEG C. (preferably 700-900 DEG C.) under an atmosphere which is inert to titanium under the reaction conditions, the titanium metal thereafter being separated from the by-product slag. There should be present at least the stoichiometric equivalent of sodium, preferably with an excess of 10-20 per cent. The inert atmosphere may consist of one or more of helium, neon, argon and krypton, or of sodium vapour, and the pressure may be atmospheric, sub-atmospheric or superatmospheric. The fluotitanates may be added as pre-heated anhydrous solids or as anhydrous molten salts, and the process may be effected batch-wise or continuously in a molybdenum-lined direct-fired steel crucible equipped with agitating means.
