Abstract
713,446. Electrolytic production of titanium. SPENCE & SONS, Ltd., P. June 13, 1952, [June 23, 1951; June 13, 1952.] Nos. 14959/51 and 23520/52. Divided out of 14959/51. Class 41. Titanium metal is produced electrolytically in a fused bath consisting of (I) titanium dioxide and one or more alkali metal phosphates, borates or fluorides or (2) alkali metal fluotitanate-halide mixtures. The cathode consists of a graphite crucible containing the mixture and the anode consists of a molybdenum strip in a protective refractory sheath, through which argon is passed slowly. After electrolysis, the melt is cooled and crushed and the titanium metal recovered by lixiviation with water or ammonium citrate. Mixtures comprising sodium tetraborate with or without potassium tetraborate or sodium monometaphosphate and sodium fluoride with potassium fluoride are described. Each of these mixtures also comprises 5 to 10 per cent titanium dioxide.
