Abstract
A boron halide is produced as a gas, leaving a slag comprising an alkali metal borate, by interacting boric oxide and an alkali metal halide in the molten state, preferably at a temperature of 800-1000 DEG C., and in a molar ratio of 3.5-1:1. The period of heating may be a few minutes or 1 hour or more. The alkali metal may be lithium, sodium, or potassium, and the halide may be fluoride, chloride, bromide, or iodide. The reactants are preferably dried before the reaction. The boric oxide is preferably prefused. The reaction may take place in a vertical furnace, inclined kiln, crucible, or retort, or in a cascade type apparatus. The slag produced may be treated with dilute aqueous sulphuric or hydrochloric acid for the recovery of boric oxide for further use in the process.
