Abstract
Metals of Groups IV(a) and VI(a) of the periodic table, especially Ti and Zr, are obtained by reducing their halides (preferably the chlorides) which are solid under normal conditions with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydrides especially Li or Ca hydrides, at elevated temperature. The reaction temperature is preferably higher than the melting temperatures of the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halides (e.g. CaCl2) being formed, and the reaction may be carried out in hydrogen. Thus Ti subchlorides are reacted with CaH2 in a hydrogen atmosphere at 800-900 DEG C.; ZrCl4 is similarly treated.
