In a calculating machine which performs two cycles of operation for total and sub-total taking, the line-spacing mechanism for the record material is normally blocked by a device which is moved from blocking position by the main operating mechanism during itementering cycles and during the second cycles only of total and sub-total operations. The line-spacing bail (not shown) is actuated by a roller 15 on an arm 13 which, after following a stud 12 in an arm on an oscillating drive shaft 10, is restored to effect line-spacing. A notch in the arm 13 is normally engaged by a plate 19, Fig. 2, but this plate is rocked to ineffective position during item-entering cycles by a connection 44, 42, 39 to an arm 29 rocked by a lever 26 controlled by a stud 33 in a link 22 reciprocated during each cycle. The lever 26 enters a notch 35 in a total slide 36 to block movement thereof. On depression of either the total or sub-total key however the total slide 36 is depressed and blocks the lever 26 which is thus prevented from moving the blocking plate 19. During the second half of the first cycle of a total or sub-total operation, a powered link 51 moves a total control link 54 to the right, Fig. 3, as described in Specification 732,760, and the link remains in that position during the line-spacing point in the second cycle. The link 54 is connected to rock a shaft 68 carrying an arm 69 in turn connected to the arm 29 which thus holds the blocking plate ineffective to permit line-spacing during the second cycle.
