Abstract
657,604. Calculating-apparatus. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. Feb. 21, 1949, No. 4628. [Class 106 (i)] In a calculating-machine having a totalizer, actuator therefor, a common member for moving the actuator in setting and return directions, a totalizer engaging and disengaging mechanism and zero stops for the actuators which also hold the latter against further setting movement after the totalizer has been disengaged in total-taking operations, each zero stop has a series of teeth which co-operate with an abutment on the related actuator, said zero stops being automatically controlled, during a total-taking operation, so as first to be disabled while the actuators are set under the control of the totalizer and then rendered effective, before the totalizer is disengaged, to re-engage the teeth with the abutments to hold the actuators against further movement in the setting direction. In each denomination, depression of a key 5 shifts a slide 6 which rocks the zero stop 3 counter-clockwise out of engagement with a block 2 on the differential actuator 1. In total-taking operations, a lever 15 is rocked by depression of the totaltaking key to remove a stud 16 from the path of a pawl 17 which is then rocked counterclockwise by a spring 39 so that a notch 32 in the pawl engages a stud 18 in an arm 19. During the ensuing operation, a stud 21 in a disc 20 on a camshaft 33 rocks the arm 19 counter-clockwise to draw a slide 23, on which the pawl 17 is pivoted, to the right. A projection 25 of the slide 23 rocks an arm 26 fast on a shaft 27, and studs 29 in arms on this shaft co-operate with projections 30 on the slides 6 to cam the latter to the left, thereby disengaging the zero stops 3. A bail 8 is then moved to the right and each actuator 1 is urged to follow by a spring and drives its associated totalizer wheel 9 to its zero position. The totalizer wheels are then disengaged from the actuator, and at this time, a stud'22 in the disc 20 engages the pawl 17 and disengages it from the stud 18 to enable the slides 6 to be restored by their springs. The zero stops 3 are thus freed and teeth 4 therein engage the blocks 2 to hold the actuator in their set positions. When the actuators are restored by the bail 8, the blocks 2 ratchet over the teeth 4 of the zero stops. Each actuator is coupled, in the usual manner, by means of a lever 10 and a link 12, to a printing segment 11 and a justifying bar 13 co-operates with teeth in the levers 10. Specifications 506,500 and 509,042 are referred to.
