Class 100(4) A modification of the typewriter or like machine claimed in the parent Specification wherein sensing means for data recorded on a work sheet co-operates with a tabulating mechanism to arrest the carriage comprises sensing means movable between operative and inoperative positions. In the embodiment described the sensing means controls the operation of a tab check lever 38. which engages tab stops 46, Fig. 4, selected ones of which, e.g. every third stop, are moved to an operative position before using the device as by a key rotating a shaft 88 having a cam member 86 which engages and moves those stops 46 not having a groove 84. Depression of a key 10, not shown, acts through a cam and power roll mechanism, pull rod 28, and crank arm 30 to rock the tab lever 34 about a stud 36 to an operative position. Movement of the tab check lever 38 and a rebound check lever 50 is however prevented by a latch blade 60 the lever 34 moving relative to the lever 38 about a pin 40 against a spring 43. The tab lever 34 also acts on an operating lever 160 to move a sensing member 130 to an actuated position in which its contact buttons engage springs 124, 125 of a contact member 122 to complete the electric circuit of the sensing means so that when its senses a mark on a record form a magnet 78 is energized which rocks the latch blade 60 to release the tab and rebound check levers 38, 50 to allow them to engage the next set tab stop to arrest the carriage without rebound. As the cam and power roll complete the cycle started by the initial depression of the key the tab lever 34 and the sensing member 130 are returned to their initial position by springs 176, 178.
