[Also in Groups XIX and XXIV] Line-spacing mechanism.-Means are described for rendering the linespacing mechanism of a calculating machine having a record-material carriage which is shuttled between two columnar positions (see Group XIX), ineffective during alternate machine operations. When the shuttling mechanism is rendered inoperative, the linespacing mechanism is effective during each machine operation. The linespacing mechanism (not described) is operated by a bail 6 engaged by a roller on a lever 53 which, when line-spacing is to take place, is rocked positively by a cam 54 during the return stroke of an oscillating cam-shaft 4. When the carriage moves to the left, a bar 15 carried thereby engages one of a pair of studs 47 in a slide 43 to move the latter leftwards. The slide 43 carries an arm 49 having a stud 50 engaged in a notch in a slide 44. This slide is thus moved to place a finger 52 beneath the lever 53 to prevent it from rocking to operate the line-spacing mechanism. When a handlever 39 is depressed to prevent operation of the carriage shifting mechanism, a slide 38 is raised and a cam surface 51 thereon rocks the arm 49 to uncouple the slide 44 from the slide 43. Whatever the carriage position, the slide 44 and its blocking finger 52 are then held inoperative by a spring 168, so that line-spacing occurs during each operation.
