Abstract
766,173. Batteries. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Sept. 15, 1954 [Sept. 21, 1953], No. 26704/54. Class 53. An air-depolarized cell is provided with a replaceable cathode and anode unit comprising a carbonaceous cathode 25 consisting of activated charcoal or other form of carbon mixed with a vinyl or other resin and a plasticizer and moulded on two steel or other plates 24. The carbon mixture also contains a waterproofing substance such as petroleum or rubber solution and may contain a small quantity of acetylene black. The steel plates are cemented to a frame 26 which extends round the edges of the plates to form a liquid-tight air passage between the plates. The passage may be divided into two compartments by a partition 41 so that the cell can continue to function if one compartment becomes flooded with electrolyte. A zinc plate 22 is situated on each side of the cathode, the two plates being connected together and supported from the frame 26 by a bolt 28 to which a lead 31 is attached. The steel plates 24 extend upwardly into the open end of the frame 26 and carry a terminal 32. The complete unit is suspended from the cover of a jar containing a solution of potassium hydroxide. Instead of the two carbon plates a single block may be used in which the steel plates are embedded, holes for the admission of air extending from the top to the interior of the block U.S.A.
