Abstract
765,790. Wrapping tubes, rods or the like. WINN & COALES, Ltd., and COALES, F. B. Jan. 25, 1955 [Jan. 24, 1954; July 16, 1954], Nos. 2175/54 and 20815/54. Class 99(2) An appliance for spirally applying a wrapping material to a length of tube, rod or the like comprises a spinner plate 9 of annular form and having a hinged segment 10, radially disposed adjustable steady rods 12 mounted on one face of the plate, the other face of the plate having mounted thereon adjustable progression rods 17 carying wheels 18, the other face of the spinner plate having affixed thereto a support rod 24 for a reel of wrapping material and a guide bar 26 for directing the wrapping on to the tube whereby the tape is spirally wound on the tube when the appliance is spun around the tube. The angle setting of the progression wheels 18 may be adjusted. Washers 21 are provided, the periphery of each having a series of vernier marks 22 which may be aligned with an index mark 23 so that the angle setting of each progression wheel is the same. The hinged segment 10 is locked in place by a spring loaded bolt hook 27 (Figs. 2 and 3) which embraces a threaded bolt 28. The hook is held in place by a conically shaped nut 29 which enters the centre opening of the hook. When the nut is screwed home a slight further closing movement is applied to the hinged segments and the progression wheels securely grip the tube. A support 24 for a reel of wrapping material is inclined slightly so that the reel has a tendency to move towards the spinner plate when the appliance is rotated. The machine can be used to apply two rolls of wrapping material at the same time a long support 24 being provided. Tape is frequently employed which requires an overwrapping of bituminized hessian and both tapes may be put on simultaneously. The rolls may be so mounted that they contra-rotate. Thus rolls of widely differing diameters may be used together as shown the progression rods are fitted with wheels in the form of discs the peripheral edges of which are sharpened. In place of such wheels rollers of steel or rubber or other suitable material may be employed. The wheels fitted to the progression rods are of steel or rubber or other suitable material. The steady rods are fitted with similar wheels or rollers.
