In making a cable in which the insulation is divided into a number of concentric parts applied in consecutive operations, the step of applying one part 2 of the insulation is terminated by the application of at least one semiconductive layer 3, and the step of applying the subsequent part 6 of the insulation is commenced by the application of a further semiconductive layer 4. Any air remaining at the boundary 5 between the two insulation parts is thus removed from the influence of the electric field. The insulation 2 may be of paper strips and the layer 3 of paper impregnated or coated with semi-conductive material. The layers 4 and 6 may be of semi-conductive paper and paper, respectively, or of a semi-conductive plastic material and an insulating plastic material respectively, both of which are applied by extrusion.
