764,026. Cables. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. Jan. 5, 1955 [Jan. 6, 1954], No. 292/55. Class 36. In a high-tension cable comprising a conductor 1, a layer 2 of semi-conducting paper and layers 7 of helically applied paper tapes, the innermost layer 4 of which has a semi-conduct. ing coating 5 in contact with the outermost layer 2, the gaps 6 between the turns of the layer 4 are bounded by or filled with semiconducting material. After applying the layers 2 to the conductor 1 a semi-conductive paste may be extruded therearound. Application of layer 4 causes this paste to flow and fill the gaps 6 (Fig. 4, not shown). The remaining paper layers 7 are then wound on. Alternatively, the tape forming the layer 4 has additional semiconductive coatings 9 on its edges. The paper tape for the inner layer 7 carries a semi-conductive band 10 along its central portion and is applied so that this band 10 overlies the gaps 6 and is in electrical contact with coatings 9. The outermost layers of insulation may be similarly formed and enclosed within semiconductive paper layers underlying the cable sheath. Specification 726,305 is referred to.
