Abstract
760,186. Folding masts for derricks. MOORE CORPORATION, L.C. Aug. 24, 1954 [Feb. 3, 1954], No. 24650/54. Class 78 (4). An oil well derrick mast 1 erected by a gin pole 22 and line 20 has a strut 17 by which it is supported when erect. In the construction illustrated the gin pole 22 can be connected at 29 to the strut 17 to brace it. Two struts 17 are provided and are hinged at 16 on opposite sides of the mast so that, when a strut 18 is disconnected, the strut 17 may be folded to the position shown in broken lines. During erection of the mast the strut 17 passes over the gin pole 22 which comprises two legs unconnected by bracing so that the drilling line may pass between them as the mast is erected. The legs of the gin pole are pivoted to shoes 23 adjacent the shoes 3 for the legs 14 of the mast and are raised by the sling 20 to an extent limited by cables 24 after which the sling serves to raise the mast. A tagline may snub the final movement of the mast, under gravity, to its erect position, and serves also to initiate folding of the mast.
