758,805. Universal joints. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 28, 1954 [July 6, 1954], No. 31159/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 65 (2). [Also in Group XXII] In a universal joint, for example for vehicle steering-gear, -of the kind comprising a stud rotatably mounted in a ball or like bearing member tiltably supported in a housing, the bearing member comprises a porous powderedmetal body, preferably formed from iron powder and preferably with hardened surfaces; it may be infiltrated with copper and may be impregnated with lubricant. The composition and process of manufacture of the bearing member are described (see Group XXII). Lubricant grooves are formed in the bearing member by cold-coining before hardening. The joint shown is similar to that described in Specification 702,708, with a modified form of end bearing member for the stud and with a screwed cap in place of a permanently-fixed retaining plate; angular movement of the lines in which the bearing member is mounted may be prevented by set-screws passing through the housing wall. A joint similar to that described in Specification 694,136, with like modifications, is also described.
