Abstract
1,112,851. Universal joints. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. 5 Dec., 1966 [22 Jan., 1966], No. 3020/66. Heading F2U. In a Hooke's joint for motor-vehicle steering columns, plain bearing bushes 10 of sintered powdered metal are retained in bores 6 in the yokes 1, 2 by, prior to assembling the bushes in the bores, coating one or both the co-operating surfaces 11, 6 of each bush and bore with an anaerobic polymer, e.g. liquid polymerizable compound, which hardens spontaneously to set solid upon the exclusion of air from the compound and bond or key the bushes to the yoke bores. A nylon ring 12 on each trunnion peg 4 serves as a thrust bearing between the intermediate cross 3 and the bushes 10.
