Abstract
Surfaces of aluminium and alloys thereof, particularly those containing one or more of Mn, Mg, Si, Cu and Zn, are chemically polished by treatment at temperatures above atmospheric, preferably at 60 DEG -120 DEG C., in a bath containing per litre of solution, 10-16 gm. mols. of phosphoric acid, 4-9 gm. mols. of nitric acid and 0,01-0,25 gm. mols. of citric acid. After chemical polishing, the surfaces may be oxidised anodically or chemically e.g. by the action of a solution of 0,16 gms. per litre of sodium silicate and 60 gms. per litre of a mixture of 5 parts of sodium carbonate and 1,5 parts of sodium chromate, followed by boiling in a 2 per cent water glass solution.
